What is Silverwing About?
Long, long ago, before animals started their yearly migrations, a huge battle happened. This "Great Battle" was fought to set rules for nature and decide where each animal group could live. During this time, birds and other animals decided to banish all bats into the dark. They were punished for not choosing a side in the battle.
The story follows a brave young bat named Shade. He goes on a journey to try and make peace with the other animals. He wants to convince them to let bats live freely again.
Meet the Characters
The Bats
- Shade: A young and brave Silverwing bat. He learns how to use "echo projection" from Zephyr. This skill helps him see with sound.
- Marina: A young Brightwing bat. She lives alone on an island after her colony banished her. Humans put a band on her wing, which her colony thought was bad luck. Shade and Marina become good friends.
- Goth: A very mean bat from South America. He was brought to the city for science tests but escaped. He tries to trick Shade into leading him to the bat colony. Shade and Marina work together to stop his evil plans.
- Throbb: Goth's brother-in-law. He often helps Goth with his schemes.
- Frieda: The wise chief elder and main leader of the Silverwing colony. She also has a band on her wing.
- Bathsheba: A selfish elder in the Silverwing colony. She doesn't like Frieda or Shade. She later leaves the colony.
- Ariel: Shade's mother. Shade's father, Cassiel, left the colony earlier.
- Mercury: Frieda's loyal helper and a leader among the female bats.
- Chinook: Shade's best friend.
- Zephyr: A wise, blind albino bat who lives in a tall cathedral spire. He helps guide the colony and teaches Shade and Marina important skills. These skills include how to navigate by stars, use plant remedies, and use echo projection.
- Scirocco: The clever leader of a group of banded bats living in a mountain cabin. He can change his shape.
- Penelope: One of the banded bats. Shade helps to rescue her.
- Hector: Chinook's father and an elder in the Silverwing colony. He later rejoins the colony at their winter home.
- Breeze: A friend to both Shade and Chinook.
Other Animals

- Orestes: Brutus's son. He helps Shade and Marina save Brutus from Goth and Throbb.

How Silverwing Was Made
The Silverwing TV series was made by Bardel Entertainment. Philippine Animation Studio also helped with the animation. Bardel and B Wooding Media first shared the show with audiences.
There were early ideas in 2001 to make a Silverwing movie for theaters. After the movie, a TV series was planned. In 2003, they announced plans for a second season of 13 episodes. They also planned an online video game website with 13 levels, one for each episode. By mid-2004, the website had over 20 games. However, the second season was not made.
