The Simeon Deming House is a very old and important house in western Washington County, Ohio, United States. It's located on Kern Road, a bit northeast of the town of Watertown. This house was built around 1815. It was the home of a brave soldier who fought in the American Revolution.

Discover the Deming House History

This historic house belonged to Simeon Deming. He was born in Sandisfield, Massachusetts. In 1780, he joined the Continental Army, which was the army fighting for America's freedom. Later, he was promoted to an officer's rank, showing his leadership skills.

What Makes the House Special?

The Simeon Deming House is one of the oldest Federal style homes still standing in Ohio. The Federal style was popular in the United States after the Revolutionary War. It often featured simple, balanced designs.

The house has strong brick walls. These walls sit on a foundation made of sandstone. It even has a full basement underground.

Unique Architectural Details

The house is two-and-a-half stories tall. It has a metal roof on top. The bricks are laid in a special pattern called Flemish bond. This pattern makes the walls look very neat and strong.

The front of the house, called the facade, is symmetrical. This means both sides look the same. It has four sections, called bays. Right in the middle is the main front door. It has a rounded arch above it. Above the door, there's a window called a transom and a beautiful fan-shaped window called a fanlight. These are all original parts of the house.

Next to the house, there's a brick smokehouse. This is the only other original building left on the property. It was used to smoke and preserve meat long ago.

Why is it a Historic Place?

In 1980, the Simeon Deming House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.

The house was added to the Register for two main reasons. First, it was important because of its connection to Simeon Deming, a Revolutionary War veteran. Second, its unique and old Federal style design made it historically important for the local area.
