Simeon's Early Baseball Days
Simeon Woods Richardson went to Kempner High School in his hometown of Sugar Land, Texas. He was a talented baseball player there. He had planned to play college baseball at the University of Texas at Austin.
However, his plans changed when the New York Mets picked him in the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. He was chosen in the second round, as the 48th player overall.
Simeon's Professional Journey
Starting with the New York Mets
After being drafted, Simeon started his professional career with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Mets. He later moved up to the Rookie Advanced Kingsport Mets. In his first year, he had a great start. He won one game and didn't lose any. His earned run average (ERA) was very low, at 1.56. He also struck out 26 batters in just over 17 innings.
In 2019, he played for the Class-A Columbia Fireflies. Later that year, he was promoted to the Advanced-A St. Lucie Mets.
Moving to the Toronto Blue Jays
Before Simeon could play for St. Lucie, he was traded. The Mets sent him and another player, Anthony Kay, to the Toronto Blue Jays. In return, the Mets received Marcus Stroman.
The Blue Jays assigned Simeon to their Advanced-A team, the Dunedin Blue Jays. Between his time with Columbia and Dunedin, Simeon started 26 games. He had a record of 6 wins and 10 losses. His ERA was 3.80, and he struck out 126 batters. In 2021, he began the season with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Playing for the Minnesota Twins
On July 30, 2021, Simeon Woods Richardson was traded again. He joined the Minnesota Twins along with Austin Martin. The Twins traded José Berríos to get them.
Simeon was sent to the Wichita Wind Surge. He played 15 games for the two teams that year. He had 3 wins and 5 losses, with a 5.91 ERA. He struck out 77 batters. In 2022, he started the season back with Wichita. The Twins then promoted him to the St. Paul Saints in August. This team plays in Triple-A.
On October 2, 2022, Simeon made it to the major leagues! He played his first MLB game for the Twins against the Detroit Tigers. He was called up to the Twins again on April 13, 2024. He earned his first career win in a game against the Detroit Tigers. He was also recalled to the Twins on April 25, 2024.
Representing Team USA
In May 2021, Simeon was chosen to play for the United States national baseball team. This team was trying to qualify for baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics. After the team qualified, Simeon was named to the Olympic roster on July 2.
The team played very well in the Olympics. They won a silver medal, which is a huge achievement! They lost to Japan in the final game for the gold medal.
