Early Life and Career
Simon-Napoléon Parent was born in Quebec City. He studied hard and became a lawyer, which means he helped people with legal matters. His son, Georges Parent, also became a well-known politician later on. Georges served in the Canadian Parliament and even became the Speaker of the Senate.
Becoming a Politician
Parent started his political journey as a member of the Liberal Party of Quebec. He first ran for election in 1890 in the area of Saint-Sauveur. He won this election and became a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) for Quebec. An MNA is like a representative for a specific area in the provincial government.
He was re-elected several times, showing that people trusted him. He won elections in 1892 and 1897.
Serving Quebec as a Leader
In 1897, Parent was asked to join the Cabinet by the Premier at the time, Félix-Gabriel Marchand. Being in the Cabinet means you are a senior minister helping to make important decisions for the province. Even though he joined the Cabinet, he had to run in another election for his area, and he won again.
He continued to win elections in 1900 and 1904. When Premier Marchand passed away in 1900, Simon-Napoléon Parent took over as the new Premier of Quebec. He led the province for several years.
However, in 1905, some other Liberal politicians, including Lomer Gouin, felt it was time for a change. They asked Parent to step down, and he agreed.
Mayor of Quebec City
Besides his work in the provincial government, Simon-Napoléon Parent also served his hometown. He was the Mayor of Quebec City for many years, from 1894 to 1906. This meant he was in charge of running the city's affairs.
Later Life and Death
Simon-Napoléon Parent passed away in Montreal in 1920. He is remembered as a key figure in Quebec's history, having served as both Premier and Mayor during an important time.
