Simon Francis Dumont (born July 9, 1986) is an American freestyle skier. He is known for his amazing jumps and tricks on skis.

Skiing Adventures

Simon Dumont is famous for how high he can jump in half-pipe competitions, sometimes going as high as 20 feet! He also has a cool trick called the superman double-frontflip.

In 2006-2007, Simon had a big fall during a jump in Park City, Utah. He landed hard and got hurt, but he was back on his skis just two months later. In 2009, he won the X Games Big Air competition by landing his double-frontflip trick.

Simon has taken part in many freestyle skiing events, especially in big air and half-pipe. He was part of Team America for the Jon Olsson Super Sessions (JOSS) with other American freestyle skiers.

In 2008, Simon and fellow skier Jon Olsson announced a new freeskiing event called the North American Open. It took place in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Setting a World Record

On April 11, 2008, Simon Dumont set a new world record for height on a quarter pipe. This happened at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine. He launched 35.5 feet into the air from a 38-foot quarter-pipe. While in the air, he performed a cork 900 tail grab, which is a very difficult trick.

Before setting the record, Simon had some tough tries. He fell 55 feet on one attempt and bruised his heel on others. After his amazing record, Simon was even a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about it.

The Dumont Cup

Simon Dumont started his own annual skiing competition called the Dumont Cup. The first one was held on April 11, 2009, at Sunday River. It was for young skiers aged about 8 to 18.

The competition course had rails, boxes, and jumps. Young skiers could qualify to compete against professional skiers like Simon himself. The winner of the first Dumont Cup was Tom Wallisch, who won $10,000.

The second Dumont Cup was on March 27, 2010. It was won by Alex Schlopy, an amateur skier. He competed against 105 other amateur athletes and then against pros like Simon Dumont and Jossi Wells. Alex won $12,000 and a scholarship to Camp Woodward, a training facility for action sports.

The Dumont Cup continued for several years:

  • The 3rd Dumont Cup was on March 26, 2011. Nick Goepper won first place.
  • The 4th Dumont Cup was on March 24, 2012. Gus Kenworthy won first place.
  • The 5th Dumont Cup winners were Nick Goepper (1st), Gus Kenworthy (2nd), and Joss Christensen (3rd).
  • The 6th Annual Dumont Cup took place on March 28–29, 2014. Gus Kenworthy won again.

Beyond Skiing

Simon Dumont has also tried his hand at auto racing. On April 25, 2009, he was a guest driver in a Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup race at Virginia International Raceway. He finished 19th in the race. Simon enjoyed the experience and even thought about racing full-time after he stops skiing.

Simon's Businesses

Simon Dumont has worked with many sponsors, including Target, Oakley, Toyota, Nike 6.0, Red Bull, and Head skis.

In 2008, Simon started his own clothing company called Empire Attire. He wanted to create clothes "made by the athletes for the athletes." His company has been successful and has its own website EmpireAttire.com. He is also a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team.

In the News

Simon was featured in an article in Rolling Stone magazine on January 24, 2008. The article talked about his career:

  • He first became known at the X Games when he was 15.
  • At 16, he competed in Honda Sessions in Colorado.
  • At 17, he won his first gold medals.
  • At 18, he had a bad injury from a jump in Park City. A video of his fall, where he dropped 80 feet, became very popular online. Simon says he is lucky to be alive after that crash. He was hurt, but he was back on the slopes just six weeks later.
