Simon Francis Dumont, born on July 9, 1986, is an amazing American freestyle skier. He is known for his incredible jumps and tricks on skis.

Skiing Adventures
Simon Dumont is famous for how high he can jump in half-pipe contests. He often goes as high as 20 feet (about 6 meters) above the pipe! His special trick is called the "superman double-frontflip."
In 2006-2007, Simon had a big fall in Park City, Utah. He jumped too far over a 100-foot (30-meter) ramp. He landed hard and got hurt, but he was back skiing just two months later! In 2009, he won the X Games Big Air contest by landing his double-frontflip.
Simon has been in many freestyle skiing events. He mostly competes in big air and half-pipe. He was part of Team America for the Jon Olsson Super Sessions (JOSS) with other skiers like Tom Wallisch.
In 2008, Simon and Jon Olsson started a new freeskiing event. It was called the North American Open and took place in Breckenridge, Colorado.
World Quarter-Pipe Record
On April 11, 2008, Simon Dumont made history! He set a new world record for quarter-pipe height at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine. He jumped an amazing 35.5 feet (about 10.8 meters) out of a 38-foot (11.5-meter) quarter-pipe. While in the air, he did a cool trick called a cork 900 tail grab.
Simon had some tough tries before he set the record. He fell 55 feet (16.7 meters) on one attempt. On other tries, he landed flat and hurt his heel. After setting the record, Simon even talked about it on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
The Dumont Cup
On April 11, 2009, Simon Dumont started his own ski contest called the Dumont Cup. It's an annual event for young skiers aged about 8 to 18. The contest takes place at Sunday River.
The course for the Dumont Cup has rails, boxes, and jumps. Young skiers get to show off their skills. The best skiers get to compete against pro skiers like Simon himself! The first-place winner in 2009, Tom Wallisch, won $10,000.
The Dumont Cup has been held many times:
- 2010: Alex Schlopy won, taking home $12,000 and a scholarship. Joss Christensen was second, and Tom Wallisch was third.
- 2011: Nick Goepper won, with Gus Kenworthy second and Jacob Wester third.
- 2012: Gus Kenworthy won, with Nick Goepper second and Joss Christensen third.
- 2013: Nick Goepper won again, followed by Gus Kenworthy and Joss Christensen.
- 2014: Gus Kenworthy won, with Nick Goepper second and Bobby Brown third.
Beyond Skiing: Auto Racing
Simon Dumont also loves cars! On April 25, 2009, he tried car racing. He was a guest driver in a Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup race. He finished 19th in the race.
Simon really enjoyed the experience. He said he was "hooked" on racing. He even thought about racing full-time after he stops skiing.
Simon's Life
Simon was born in Bethel, Maine. His parents are Francis and Barbara Dumont. He has an older brother and a younger sister. Simon is also part of the Passamaquoddy Native American group. He is 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm) tall and weighs 150 pounds (68 kg).
He went to Telstar Regional Middle/High School in Bethel. He played golf and was a great soccer player. His home ski resort is Sunday River. When he was a child, Simon was a model and even tried out for the movie Home Alone 3. He says pro skiers Angus Nelson and Jonathan Schulz inspired him to start skiing.
Simon's Businesses
Simon has many sponsors, including big names like Target and Red Bull. In 2008, Simon started his own clothing company called Empire Attire. He wanted to make clothes "made by the athletes for the athletes." His company has been successful. You can find their website at EmpireAttire.com. Simon is also a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team.
Simon in the News
Simon was featured in Rolling Stone magazine in 2008. The article talked about his journey in skiing. He first became known at the X Games when he was 15. He won his first gold medals at 17.
The article also mentioned his big crash at Park City when he was 18. A video of his 80-foot fall became very popular online. Simon knows he was lucky to be alive after that crash. He broke his pelvis and hurt his spleen. But he was back on the slopes just six weeks later! Simon has said that after freestyle skiing, he wants to try backcountry skiing. He likes that landing in powder snow "doesn't hurt so much."
