Inspiration for Roman Stories
Simon Scarrow shared what made him interested in the Roman era. He said his Latin teachers helped him love the language. They also made him fascinated by Roman history and culture.
He also watched many "swords and sandals" movies when he was young. These movies are historical films, often about ancient Rome. The TV show I, Claudius also inspired him.
He gets ideas for his realistic characters from his time in the Officer Training Corps. This was a program where he learned about military life.
Eagles of the Empire Series
The Eagles of the Empire series follows two main characters. They are Quintus Licinius Cato and Lucius Cornelius Macro. Both are brave Roman soldiers.
Macro is an experienced soldier, a centurion. Cato is younger and starts as Macro's assistant, an optio. Their adventures begin in 42 AD.
The books show their battles in Germania and the Roman invasion of Britain. They also serve in the Imperial Navy and as agents for the Emperor. Sometimes they face uprisings or try to save the Emperor in Rome.
The characters Cato and Macro even appeared in another book series. Simon's brother, Alex Scarrow, used them in his TimeRiders book, Gates of Rome.
