Simon Scarrow (born 3 October 1962) is a British writer known for his exciting historical novels. Before becoming a full-time author, he worked for the government and then taught at colleges.

He is most famous for his Eagles of the Empire series. These books are about Roman soldiers and their adventures in the Roman Empire. The stories often take place during the Roman invasion of Britain. As of 2025, there are 23 books in this popular series. The newest book, Revenge Of Rome, came out in 2024.

Simon Scarrow has also written other series. One is called Revolution, which focuses on the lives of famous historical figures like Wellington and Napoleon. Another series, Gladiator, is written especially for young adult readers. In 2021, he even created an audio tour for the Roman Colosseum called Blood and Sand.

Simon Scarrow's Books

Simon Scarrow has written many books, often inspired by his love for history. He once shared that his interest in the Roman era came from great Latin teachers and old "swords and sandals" movies he watched as a kid. He also mentioned being inspired by the TV show I, Claudius.

He says his experiences in the Officer Training Corps helped him create realistic characters in his stories.

The Eagles of the Empire Series

The Eagles of the Empire series follows two main characters: Quintus Licinius Cato and Lucius Cornelius Macro. They are both Roman soldiers. Macro is an experienced veteran, while Cato starts as a young slave who joins the army.

Their adventures begin in 42 AD. They fight battles in Germania and take part in the Roman invasion of Britain. Later, they serve in the Imperial Navy and work as agents for the Emperor. They even get shipwrecked on the island of Crete and face a big uprising. In some books, they are in Rome, trying to protect the Emperor.

Interestingly, Cato and Macro also appeared in one of the TimeRiders books, Gates of Rome. Simon Scarrow allowed his brother, Alex, to use his characters in that novel.
