Simoom Sound facts for kids
Simoom Sound is a cool place on the Central Coast of British Columbia in Canada. It's like a long, deep arm of the sea that reaches inland. You can find it between Tribune Channel and Kingcome Inlet, next to the Wishart Peninsula.
A small community and a post office called Simoom Sound, British Columbia are named after this sound. They are actually located in Echo Bay on Gilford Island. Also, Kawages Indian Reserve No. 4 is on the north side of Simoom Sound. This reserve belongs to the Dzawada'enuxw First Nation, who are part of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples.
Why is it Called Simoom Sound?
The name "Simoom Sound" comes from a ship! It was named after a Royal Navy troopship called HMS Simoom. This ship had 8 guns and was commanded by Captain John Kingcome. He was a very important naval officer. The sound was named around 1863 or 1864, when Captain Kingcome was a Rear Admiral in charge of the Pacific Station. Kingcome Inlet is also named after him.
Simoom Sound's Early History
A famous explorer named Captain George Vancouver visited Simoom Sound a long time ago. He anchored his ships, the Discovery and Chatham, there. This happened from July 29 to August 5, 1792. While his ships were anchored, his crew used smaller rowboats to explore the area around the sound.
