Sinan Şamil Sam (born June 23, 1974 – died October 30, 2015) was a famous Turkish heavyweight professional boxer. He was known as the "Bull of the Bosphorus" because of his strong fighting style. During his career, he won important titles like the EBU and WBC International championships. Sadly, he passed away due to liver and kidney problems.
Amateur Career
Sinan Şamil Sam started boxing as an amateur, which means he didn't get paid for his fights. He was very successful, winning the Turkish Amateur Boxing Championship nine times! He also won many medals in big international competitions.
Major Amateur Achievements
- In 1992, he won a gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Montreal, Canada. He competed in the Light Heavyweight division.
- The same year, he won a silver medal at the Junior European Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland.
- In 1993, he won a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in France.
- Also in 1993, he earned a silver medal at the European Amateur Boxing Championships held in Bursa, Turkey.
- In 1995, he won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany. He also got a bronze medal at the World Military Games in Rome, Italy, where he fought against Wladimir Klitschko.
- In 1998, he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Minsk, Belarus.
- His biggest amateur win was in 1999, when he won a gold medal at the World Championships in Houston, Texas. He beat Audley Harrison and Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov on his way to becoming a world champion.
Professional Career
After his great amateur career, Sinan Şamil Sam became a professional boxer in 2000. This meant he would now get paid for his fights. He was known by his nickname, "Bull of the Bosphorus."
He started his professional career very strongly, winning his first 18 fights in a row! Some of his notable wins during this time were against boxers like Przemyslaw Saleta, Danny Williams, and Julius Francis.
In 2003, he faced his first professional loss against Juan Carlos Gómez. He then lost his next fight to Luan Krasniqi.
In 2005, he beat Lawrence Clay Bey. This set up a big fight against Oleg Maskaev, but Sinan lost that match. After this, he won against Saul Montana in 2006. However, he later lost a very important fight to Oliver McCall in 2007, which was a "WBC eliminator" match.
After winning three more fights against different opponents, he fought Paolo Vidoz on July 4, 2008. Sinan won this fight and became the EBU heavyweight champion, while also keeping his WBC Mediterranean heavyweight title.
