History of Sinclair
Sinclair has an interesting past, especially during a tough time in American history.
A Stop on the Underground Railroad
Before and during the Civil War, Sinclair was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. This was a secret network of safe houses and routes. It helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North. At first, Sinclair was just a stop for trains. But it grew into a small community over time.
Times of Change and Challenge
Like many small places, Sinclair has seen good times and hard times. During the Great Depression, a period of severe economic hardship in the 1930s, the people of Sinclair faced many difficulties. In 1925, the community had a population of only 12 people.
The 2008 Tornado
On May 25, 2008, a very strong tornado hit southern Butler County. This tornado was an EF5, which is the strongest type. It caused a lot of damage in Sinclair. The tornado destroyed the community's grain elevator. It also ripped apart large grain bins and threw big tanks of anhydrous ammonia into nearby fields.
