Sint-Lievens-Houtem is a Dutch-speaking town in Belgium. It is located in the Flemish Region, which is the northern part of Belgium where people speak Dutch. The town is found in the province of East Flanders.
Sint-Lievens-Houtem is in an area called the Denderstreek. It is also near the edge of the Flemish Ardennes. This is a hilly part of East Flanders province. A small river called the Molenbeek flows through some parts of Sint-Lievens-Houtem.
The town gets its name from Saint Livinus. He was a Christian saint. People believe he was buried in this area long ago.
Sint-Lievens-Houtem is made up of several smaller towns and villages. These include Bavegem, Letterhoutem, Sint-Lievens-Houtem itself, Vlierzele, and Zonnegem. There are also smaller areas called Espenhoek, Cotthem, and Hoogveld.
What is Houtem Jaarmarkt?
Every November, Sint-Lievens-Houtem hosts a special event. It is called the Houtem Jaarmarkt. This is a big winter fair and livestock market. Hundreds of traders come to sell cattle and horses.
This market is very important to the local culture. In 2010, the Houtem Jaarmarkt was added to a special list. This list is from UNESCO. It recognizes important cultural traditions around the world.
