Sinton's Baseball History: The Plymouth Oilers
From 1948 to 1958, Sinton was famous for its semiprofessional baseball team, the Plymouth Oilers. The Plymouth Oil Company sponsored this team. They had many oil drilling operations nearby.
The Oilers hired talented college players for the summer. They also gave jobs to experienced players. By 1950, the team played 46 games. They finished fourth in a big national tournament.
In 1951, the Oilers won the state title. They then went on to win the national championship! This was the first time a Texas team had done so. A pitcher named Mike Blyzka even threw a "no-hit, no-run" game. This means no one on the other team got a hit or scored any runs.
The Oilers kept doing well, placing second in the national tournament in 1955. In 1957, Sinton was even called the best city in the nation for supporting semipro baseball. However, in 1958, the Plymouth Oil Company stopped its support, and the team ended.
