Sir Alfred Erasmus Dryden (born October 14, 1821 – died April 2, 1912) was an English man who played cricket at a high level. He was also a barrister, which is a type of lawyer. He held a special title called a Baronet.
Early Life and Education
Alfred Dryden was born in October 1821 in a place called Adlestrop, in Gloucestershire, England. His father was Sir Henry Dryden.
Alfred went to a famous school called Winchester College. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Oxford, which is part of Oxford University.
Cricket Career
While Alfred was studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for the university team, the Oxford University. First-class cricket was the highest level of professional cricket played at that time.
His first game was in 1841 against the Marylebone Cricket Club in Oxford. He played for Oxford University until 1843. In total, he played seven first-class matches. Alfred scored 145 runs in these games. His highest score in one game was 29 runs. He also caught 7 balls.
Becoming a Lawyer
After his time at Oxford, Alfred Dryden decided to become a lawyer. He studied at a place called the Middle Temple, which is one of the four main places in London where barristers are trained. In 1847, he officially became a barrister. This meant he was qualified to argue cases in court.
Family and Titles
Alfred Dryden married Frances Isabella Curwen in May 1849. They had seven children together.
In July 1899, his brother, Sir Henry Edward Leigh Dryden, passed away. When this happened, Alfred inherited special titles. He became the 5th Baronet Dryden and the 8th Baronet Turner. A Baronet is a title given by the King or Queen, similar to a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.
Alfred Dryden passed away in April 1912 at Canons Ashby. After he died, his son, Sir Arthur Dryden, inherited his titles.
