Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Archibald Edmonstone, 3rd Baronet (born March 12, 1795 – died March 15, 1871) was a British explorer and author. He was known for his travels, especially to Egypt, and for writing about his adventures.

Early Life and Education

Archibald Edmonstone was born in London on March 12, 1795. He was the oldest son of Sir Charles Edmonstone, 2nd Baronet. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that is passed down through families.

When he was 13, in 1808, Archibald started studying at Eton, a very famous school in England. Later, in 1812, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, which is part of the well-known University of Oxford. He finished his university studies in 1816.

Becoming a Baronet

Archibald's father passed away on April 1, 1821. After his father's death, Archibald became the 3rd Baronet, inheriting the title. He also tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Stirlingshire, which was his father's old political area. However, he was not successful in winning the election.

Adventures in Egypt

In 1819, Archibald Edmonstone traveled to Egypt. This was a very exciting journey, as travel was much harder back then. While in Egypt, he explored two special places called oases in the huge desert. Oases are like green islands in the desert where water can be found.

After his trip, he wrote a book about his experiences. This book included pictures and maps of the old temples and tombs he found. It helped people in Britain learn more about these distant and mysterious places.

Family and Later Life

On October 10, 1832, Archibald married his cousin, Emma Wilbraham. They had three daughters, but sadly, all of them passed away when they were very young.

Sir Archibald Edmonstone died in London on March 13, 1871, just a few days after his 76th birthday.
