Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean (born October 14, 1798, died January 27, 1883) was an important leader of the Scottish Clan Maclean. He was the 25th Chief of the clan, a role he held from 1847 until his death in 1883. He also had a long career in the military. He was a high-ranking officer, called a colonel, in the 81st regiment. Later, he worked as the Military Secretary in Gibraltar, which meant he was a key helper for military leaders there. He was also the 9th Baronet of Morvern.
Early Life and Education
Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean was born on October 14, 1798. His father was Sir Fitzroy Jeffreys Grafton Maclean, 8th Baronet. Charles received a good education. He studied at Eton College, a famous school in England. He also attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This college is where many British army officers are trained.
Military Career
In 1816, Sir Charles began his military career. He joined the Scots Guards, which is a part of the British Army. Later, he became the commander of the 81st Regiment. A regiment is a large group of soldiers. He also served as the Military Secretary in Gibraltar. This was an important job helping the military leaders there.
In 1846, he decided to retire from the army. At that time, he was a Colonel of the 13th Light Dragoons. He was known for standing up for Scottish traditions. He was against the idea of getting rid of kilts in the army. Kilts are traditional Scottish skirts worn by men.
Family Life
On May 10, 1831, Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean married Emily Eleanor Marsham. She was the fourth daughter of a respected man named Jacob Marsham. Sir Charles and Emily had several children together.
Their children included:
- Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, 10th Baronet: He was their oldest son and became the next Baronet after his father.
- Emily Frances Harriet Maclean
- Louisa Marianne Maclean: She married Ralph Pelham Nevill in 1860.
- Fanny Henrietta Maclean: She married Admiral Sir Arthur Hood, 1st Baron Hood of Avalon in 1855.
- Georgiana Marcia Maclean: She married John Rolls, 1st Baron Llangattock in 1868.
Later Life and Death
Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean passed away on January 27, 1883. He died at West Cliffe House in Folkestone, which is a town in Kent, England. He lived to be 84 years old.
