A Long and Interesting Life
Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean was born on May 18, 1835. His birthplace was near a town called Shorne in Kent, England. He was the only son of Sir Charles Fitzroy Maclean, who was the 25th Chief of the Maclean clan before him.
Military Career
Sir Fitzroy started his military journey at a young age. He joined the 7th Dragoon Guards as a cornet, which was a junior officer rank. He quickly moved up the ranks.
- In 1852, he became a lieutenant in the 13th Light Dragoons.
- By 1854, he was promoted to captain.
- In 1856, he became a major.
- He reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1861.
- By 1871, he was leading the 13th Hussars.
- In 1880, he became a full colonel and commanded the Queen's Own West Kent Yeomanry Cavalry.
He served in important military campaigns between 1854 and 1855. He was in Bulgaria and the Crimea, a region near the Black Sea. He took part in the landing at Yevpatoria and fought in the Battle of the Alma. He was also part of the Siege of Sevastopol. Sadly, he became sick right before the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, so he couldn't join that battle.
Family Life
Sir Fitzroy married Constance Marianne Ackers on January 17, 1872. She was the younger daughter of George Holland Ackers. They had five children together:
- Major Hector Fitzroy Maclean (born 1873, died 1932). He was the father of Sir Charles Hector Fitzroy Maclean, who would become the 11th Baronet.
- Charles Lachlan Maclean (born 1874, died 1958).
- Fitzroy Holland Maclean (born 1876, died 1881). He passed away when he was very young.
- John Marsham Maclean (born 1879, died 1901). He was killed in action during the Boer War at just 22 years old.
- Finovola Marianne Eleanor Maclean (born 1887, died 1985). She married twice.
Becoming Clan Chief
In 1883, when his father passed away, Sir Fitzroy became the 10th Baronet of Morvern. He also took on the important role of the 26th Chief of the Maclean Clan. This meant he was the main leader and representative of his family.
He received special honors for his service. In 1897, he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). Then, in 1904, he was knighted in the same order, becoming a Knight Commander (KCB). In 1910, he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Kent, which is a local official role. Later, in 1932, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Argyllshire in Scotland.
Restoring Duart Castle
One of Sir Fitzroy's most famous achievements was buying Duart Castle in September 1911. This ancient castle had been the home of the Maclean chiefs for centuries, but it had fallen into disrepair. Sir Fitzroy spent a lot of time and effort to restore it, bringing it back to its former glory. This was a huge deal for the Maclean clan, as it gave them their historic home back.
On his 100th birthday, he planted a rowan tree in the castle grounds. This was a special tradition, as rowan trees were believed to protect against bad spirits. He lived for another year after that, passing away on November 22, 1936, at the age of 101. After his death, his grandson, Sir Charles Hector Fitzroy Maclean, became the 11th Baronet and the 27th Clan Chief.
Sir Fitzroy was also involved in many important groups. He was the Grand President of the Clan Gillean Association and an honorary president of the Mull and Iona Association. He also served as vice-president and president of the Highland Society of London.
