Charles Hector Fitzroy Maclean, also known as Baron Maclean, was an important person in the United Kingdom. He lived from 1916 to 1990. From 1971 to 1984, he served as the Lord Chamberlain to Elizabeth II, who was the Queen of the United Kingdom. He also became the 27th leader, or "Clan Chief," of the Clan Maclean in 1936, after his grandfather passed away.

About Charles Maclean
Charles Maclean was born on May 5, 1916. His parents were Major Hector Fitzroy Maclean and Winifred Joan Wilding. In 1936, he became the 27th Chief of the Clan Maclean of Duart. This happened after his grandfather, Sir Fitzroy Maclean, 10th Baronet, died.
In 1941, Charles married Elizabeth Mann. She was the granddaughter of Sir Edward Mann. Charles and Elizabeth had two children and eight grandchildren:
- The Hon. Lachlan Hector Charles Maclean (born in 1942). He is married and has children.
- The Hon. Janet Elizabeth Maclean (born in 1944). She is also married and has children.
His Military Service
Charles Maclean served in World War II. He was part of the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards. He fought in several countries, including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. After the war, he returned to Scotland. There, he became a farmer, raising sheep and cattle. From 1954 to 1975, he also held the position of Lord Lieutenant of Argyllshire. This role meant he was the Queen's representative in that area of Scotland.
His Role in Scouting
Charles Maclean was very involved with the Boy Scouts. He was the Chief Scout for the United Kingdom from 1959 to 1971. He was also the Chief Scout for the Commonwealth from 1959 to August 1975. During his time, he led big changes in the Boy Scouts Association.
In 1967, the World Organization of the Scout Movement gave him a special award. It was called the Bronze Wolf. This award is given for outstanding service to Scouting around the world.
Later Life and Royal Service
In 1971, Charles Maclean was given the title of Baron Maclean. This made him a "life peer," which means he became a member of the House of Lords for his lifetime.
His first important duty as Lord Chamberlain was in 1972. He helped organize the funeral of the Duke of Windsor. The Lord Chamberlain is a senior officer in the Royal Household. They manage many important events and ceremonies for the monarch.
In 1984 and 1985, he served as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He passed away on February 8, 1990, at Hampton Court Palace.
