Family Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is like a special symbol or picture for a family or clan. It tells a story about their history and values. The Maclean coat of arms has several interesting parts:
- Shield: The main part of the coat of arms is divided into four sections.
- One section shows a red rock. This might represent a place called Cairnburgh.
- Another section has a hand holding a small cross.
- A third section shows a "lymphad," which is an old type of ship with oars and sails. This often represents journeys or power over the sea.
- The last section shows a salmon swimming and two eagles' heads. The eagles' heads might represent hawks that Maclean chiefs used to give to Scottish kings.
- Crest: Above the shield, there is a silver tower with battlements, like a castle tower.
- Supporters: On either side of the shield, there are two animals. On one side, there is a seal. On the other side, there is an ostrich holding a horseshoe in its beak.
- Motto: Below the shield, there is a motto, which is a short phrase. The Maclean motto is "Virtue mine honour." This means that their good qualities and actions are what they value most.
