Sir Charles Turner, 1st Baronet (born November 11, 1727 – died October 26, 1783) was an important British politician. He also held the special role of Lord Mayor of York, a leader for the city of York.
Early Life and Education
Charles Turner was born in 1727 in a place called Kirkleatham, which is now part of Redcar and Cleveland in England. His parents were Jane Turner and William Turner. His family had a long history in the area.
Charles went to Beverley Grammar School to get his early education. After that, he studied law at a famous place called the Inner Temple in 1744. He also attended Trinity College, Cambridge in 1745, which is one of the oldest and most respected universities in England.
Political Career
Sir Charles Turner had a busy career in politics. From 1759 to 1760, he served as the High Sheriff of Yorkshire. This was an important local role, like a chief law enforcement officer for the county.
Later, he became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the city of York. He held this position for many years, from March 21, 1768, until November 17, 1783. As an MP, he represented the people of York in the British Parliament, helping to make laws for the country.
In 1772, he was also chosen to be the Lord Mayor of York. This is a very old and respected position, making him the main leader and representative of the city.
In 1782, he was given a special honor and became a Baronet. This meant he received the title "Sir" and his family could pass on this title.
Family Life
Sir Charles Turner was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Wombwell. After she passed away, he married Mary Shuttleworth in 1771.
Together, Sir Charles and Mary had three children:
- Sir Charles Turner, 2nd Baronet (born 1773 – died 1810): He inherited his father's special title and the family home.
- Mary Turner (died 1815): She married a man named Richard Oliver Gascoigne.
- Elizabeth Turner: She married Colonel Campbell.
Sir Charles lived at Kirkleatham Hall, a large family home. He passed away on October 26, 1783, when he was 55 years old. His son, also named Charles, became the 2nd Baronet. Sadly, when his son died in 1810 without any children, the special title of Baronet for the Turner family came to an end.
