Sir Duncan was the son of Sir Dugald Campbell, 1st Baronet of Auchinbreck and Mary Erskine. He was called back to Scotland by Archibald Campbell to lead the Covenanter army at the Battle of Inverlochy (1645).

Who Was Sir Duncan Campbell?

Sir Duncan Campbell was born around 1597 in Colquhoun, Scotland. He was the second son of Dugald Campbell of Auchinbreck. When his father passed away in 1641, Duncan took over his titles and lands. In 1643, he bought Carnasserie Castle from the Marquess of Argyll.

A Leader in Troubled Times

Sir Duncan Campbell was also involved in politics. He served in the Scottish Parliament for Argyllshire from 1628 to 1643. This means he helped make decisions for the region.

The Covenanters and Conflicts

During the early 1640s, there were many conflicts known as the Irish Wars. Sir Duncan led his Covenanter troops from Argyll in fighting on Rathlin Island.

Later, on February 2, 1645, he was back in Scotland. He led Argyll’s troops at the Inverlochy. During this battle, he was captured and killed. Some believe his death was in return for the earlier conflicts on Rathlin Island.

His sister, known as Fionnghal Chaimbeul, wrote a sad poem in Gaelic about the Battle of Inverlochy. It was a very difficult time for her family, as her brother was killed, and her eldest son fought on the other side of the battle.
