Sir Edward Henry Charles Patrick Bellingham (born January 26, 1879, died May 19, 1956) was an important figure from both England and Ireland. He was a soldier, a politician, and a diplomat. He also held a special title, a Baronet, which is like a hereditary knight.

Early Life and Education

Edward Bellingham was the oldest son of Sir Alan Henry Bellingham, who was also a Baronet. His mother was Lady Constance Noel. He went to a school called The Oratory School. After that, he trained to be a soldier at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1921, he inherited his father's title and became the 5th Baronet.

Military Career

Edward Bellingham joined the army in 1899, becoming an ensign in The Royal Scots regiment. He fought in the Second Boer War in South Africa. For his bravery, he received the Queen's South Africa Medal and later the King's South Africa Medal.

During the First World War, he was injured and recognized for his actions three times. In 1916, he received the Distinguished Service Order, a special award for bravery. He was promoted to major in 1917 and served as a temporary brigadier-general. He also became a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1918. He retired from the army in 1922.

Political and Diplomatic Roles

Sir Edward Bellingham lived at Castlebellingham in County Louth, Ireland. In 1921, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Louth. This was an important role representing the King in the county. He held this position for only one year. This was because the Irish Free State was established, and Ireland became independent.

In 1925, he was elected to the Free State Seanad Éireann, which was the Irish parliament. He was a popular choice, getting many votes. He served in the Seanad until it was changed in 1936.

When World War II began, Sir Edward joined the Royal Air Force. He became a flight officer in 1941 and later led a squadron. After the war, he worked in Germany until 1947. In his later years, he served as a vice-consul at the British embassy in Guatemala. This meant he helped British citizens and represented his country there.

Personal Life

Sir Edward Bellingham had a passion for farming. He raised special kinds of pigs and Aberdeen Angus cattle. On June 11, 1904, he married Charlotte Elizabeth. She was the daughter of Alfred Payne. They had one daughter together.

Sir Edward Bellingham passed away in 1956. His wife, Charlotte, died in 1964. His nephew, Roger, inherited the Baronet title after him.
