Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Edward Bellingham (born 1506, died 1549) was an important English soldier and a leader in Ireland. He was known for his military skills and for helping to bring order to Ireland during a challenging time. He served under King Henry VIII and King Edward VI.

Early Life and Adventures

Edward Bellingham was born in 1506. His father was Edward Bellingham from Erringham, a place in Sussex, England. His mother, Jane Shelley, came from the well-known Shelley family. When his father passed away in 1511, Edward and his brother became wards of the Duke of Norfolk. This meant the Duke looked after them and their property.

Edward Bellingham became a soldier. He traveled to Hungary with Sir Thomas Seymour. They were there during big battles in cities like Pesth and Buda. However, the Hungarian forces were defeated by the Ottoman Empire.

Later, Bellingham fought in the Low Countries against the French army. During these battles, he was captured. He also took part in the Siege of Boulogne, an important military event.

Defending the Isle of Wight

One of Bellingham's most famous achievements happened in 1545. The French tried to invade England, and he bravely defended the Isle of Wight. He successfully pushed back the French raiding forces, protecting the island from attack.

Becoming a Leader in Ireland

After King Henry VIII died, Edward Bellingham became a member of the English House of Commons. This was part of the English government. He also joined the privy council, a group of advisors to the king, under King Edward VI.

In 1547, Bellingham took part in military actions in Ireland. During this time, he might have helped rebuild Leighlinbridge Castle in County Carlow.

Lord Deputy of Ireland

In May 1548, Edward Bellingham was sent to Ireland as the Lord Deputy. This was a very important job, like being the king's main representative and governor in Ireland. At that time, Ireland was in a very difficult and unsettled state.

Bellingham quickly got to work. He stopped a rebellion by the O'Connors in Leinster. He also cleared the Pale, an area controlled by the English, of rebels. He ordered the building of new forts. His actions helped the English government gain more respect and control in areas like Munster and Connaught.

Challenges and Legacy

Edward Bellingham was a strong-willed leader. He often had disagreements with his council, the group of advisors who helped him govern. However, even his opponents agreed that he was an excellent military leader in Ireland. One person said he was "the best man of war that ever he had seen in Ireland."

His time as Lord Deputy was short but very successful. He was called back to England in 1549. Sadly, he passed away later that year due to illness. There is no record of him ever marrying or having children.
