Sir Edward Hunter-Blair, 8th Baronet facts for kids
Sir Edward Thomas Hunter Blair (born December 15, 1920 – died October 21, 2006) was a British landowner and forester. He was the 8th Baronet in his family. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that is passed down through families. Sir Edward was the son of Sir James Hunter Blair, who was the 7th Baronet, and Jean Galloway McIntyre.
Early Life and Education
Edward grew up and went to several well-known schools. He studied at Sandroyd School and then at Eton College. Later, he attended Balliol College, Oxford, which is a famous university.
Career and Public Service
Sir Edward served his country during World War II. He was part of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry for eight months in 1941. After the war, he worked as a Civil Servant from 1941 to 1943. A civil servant helps the government run things.
He also worked as a journalist from 1944 to 1949, where he was an assistant foreign editor. This meant he helped report on news from other countries. Later in life, he was involved in local government. He was a member of the Kirkcudbrightshire county council from 1970 to 1971.
Sir Edward also held other important roles. He was on the Council of the Wyndham Trust from 1992 to 1996. He joined the Scottish Association for Public Transport in 1993. He was also the president of the Dumfries and Galloway Mountaineering Club. In 1993, he wrote a book about his life called Our Troubled Future.
Family and Baronetcy
Sir Edward married twice. His first wife was Norma Harris, and they married in 1956. They adopted a son named Alan and a daughter named Helen. Later, he married Jonet Clemency Wilson Reid of Robertland.
When his father passed away in 1985, Sir Edward became the 8th Baronet. The title had been created way back in 1786.
After Sir Edward passed away in 2006, the baronetcy went to his relative, Patrick David Hunter Blair, who was born in 1958. This happened because, in the rules for baronetcies, adopted children cannot inherit the title.
Sir Edward's funeral was held at Straiton Parish Church on October 27, 2006.
