Early Life and Family Background
Edward Seymour was the oldest son of Sir Edward Seymour, 2nd Baronet. His mother was Dorothy Killegrew. His family lived at Berry Pomeroy Castle. He was a direct descendant of Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset. The Duke was a very important figure in English history.
A Life in Politics and War
Edward Seymour began his political career in 1640. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Devon. This happened during a short meeting of Parliament called the Short Parliament. Later that year, he was re-elected as an MP for Devon in the Long Parliament.
The English Civil War
In 1642, a big conflict started in England. This was the English Civil War. Edward Seymour joined the Royalist army. He became a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer. Because he supported the King, he was stopped from being an MP in 1643.
Later in the war, he was captured. He was held in prison in Exeter. He stayed there for a long time. He was not set free until 1655. In 1659, his father passed away. Edward then became the 3rd Baronet of Berry Pomeroy. This meant he inherited his father's title.
After the War
After the war ended, the King was brought back to power in 1660. This time was known as the Restoration. Edward Seymour continued his public service. He became a Deputy Lieutenant for Devon. This role helped keep order in the county.
In 1661, he was elected as an MP again. This time he represented Totnes. He served in Parliament until 1679. In 1677, he was given another important job. He became Vice-Admiral of Devon. He held this position until he died. He also served as High Sheriff of Devon from 1679 to 1680. He was elected MP for Totnes one last time in 1685. He remained an MP until his death.
Family Life
Edward Seymour married Anne Portman in 1630. Anne was the daughter of Sir John Portman, 1st Baronet. They had five sons and one daughter together:

- William Seymour, who never married
- Henry Seymour Portman (around 1637 – February 23, 1728). He later took the name Portman. He married Penelope Haslewood first, and then Meliora Fitch. He did not have any children.
- Elizabeth Seymour, who married Sir Joseph Tredenham
Edward Seymour passed away at the age of 78. He was buried on December 7, 1688. After his death, a list of everything inside Berry Pomeroy Castle was made.
