Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Francis Lawley, 2nd Baronet (born around 1630 – died October 25, 1696) was an important English politician and a member of the royal court. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, from 1659 to 1679.

Who Was Sir Francis Lawley?

Sir Francis Lawley was the son of Sir Thomas Lawley, 1st Baronet. His family lived near a town called Much Wenlock in Shropshire, England. When his father passed away in 1646, Francis inherited the title of Baronet and the family's land. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down through the family. Sir Francis also gained control of a large estate called Canwell in Staffordshire, which became the main home for his family.

His Time in Parliament

Sir Francis Lawley was elected to Parliament several times.

Representing Wenlock

In 1659, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Wenlock. This was during a time called the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was elected again for Wenlock in 1660 to the Convention Parliament. Being an MP meant he helped make decisions and laws for the country.

Representing Shropshire

In 1661, Sir Francis was elected to represent the larger area of Shropshire in the Cavalier Parliament. He held this important position for many years, serving until 1679.

Royal Court Role

Later in his life, from 1690 to 1696, Sir Francis Lawley held a special job at the royal court. He was the Master of the Jewel Office. This role meant he was in charge of the King's or Queen's valuable jewels and plate (like fancy dishes and silverware).

Family Life

Sir Francis Lawley married a woman named Anne Whitmore. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Whitmore, 1st Baronet. After Sir Francis passed away, his son, Thomas, inherited his title and continued the family line.
