Sir Thomas Whitmore (born 1612, died 1653) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons of England, which is like the main part of the English Parliament. Sir Thomas supported the King's side, known as the Royalists, during the English Civil War.

Sir Thomas Whitmore's Early Life and Family

Thomas Whitmore was born in 1612. His father was Sir William Whitmore. They lived at Apley Hall in Shropshire, England. Thomas's mother was Dorothy Weld. His father, Sir William, was a very important person in Shropshire. He was the High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1620. Thomas also had an uncle, Sir George Whitmore, who was the Lord Mayor of London.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In April 1640, Thomas Whitmore was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Bridgnorth. This was for a short meeting of Parliament called the Short Parliament. He was chosen again in November 1640 for the Long Parliament. He kept this job until 1644. During this time, he was given a special title. He became a baronet of Apley on June 28, 1641. This meant he was called "Sir Thomas Whitmore, 1st Baronet."

Supporting the King in the Civil War

Sir Thomas Whitmore supported King Charles I during the English Civil War. Because of this, he lost his seat in Parliament in 1644. In February 1645, his home, Apley Hall, was taken over by soldiers who supported Parliament. Sir Thomas, his father, and about sixty other men were captured. Their lands and belongings were taken by the county's committee. They were held captive for a long time. Sir Thomas was also ordered to pay a very large fine of £5,000.

Later Life and Family

Sir Thomas Whitmore died when he was 41 years old. His son, William, became the next baronet. Sir Thomas had married Elizabeth Acton. She was the daughter of Sir William Acton, 1st Baronet. They had several children:
