Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir George Shee, 2nd Baronet (born June 14, 1785, in Calcutta; died January 25, 1870, in London) was an important Irish diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations, working to keep good relationships. He held several key roles in the British government and abroad.

Sir George Shee's Life and Career

George Shee was the oldest son of Sir George Shee, 1st Baronet and Elizabeth Maria Crisp. He went to school near Dublin and later studied at St John's College, Cambridge. He earned his first degree in 1806 and a master's degree in 1811.

While at Cambridge, he became good friends with Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston. Shee supported Palmerston in elections. Because of this friendship, Palmerston helped Shee get a job in 1810. This job was as Agent-General for volunteers and militia, and he held it until 1817.

On February 3, 1825, George Shee inherited the Shee Baronetcy from his father. A baronetcy is a special title that can be passed down in a family. He lived at Dunmore House in Galway, Ireland. He also served as a J.P. and D.L. for Galway. These were important local government roles. In 1828, he was the High Sheriff of County Galway, which meant he was the chief law enforcement officer for the county.

From November 1830 to 1834, Shee worked for the Whig Government. The Whigs were a major political group in Britain at the time. He served as the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. This meant he helped manage Britain's relationships with other countries.

After this, he became a diplomat representing Britain in other nations:

  • From 1834 to 1835, he was the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Prussia in Berlin. This was a very high-ranking diplomatic role.
  • From 1835 to 1844, he was the Minister Plenipotentiary to Württemberg in Stuttgart.
  • From 1841 to 1844, he also served as a diplomat to Baden.

Shee also wrote articles about foreign policy for The Globe, a British newspaper. He passed away on January 25, 1870, in London. He did not have any children.

Sir George Shee's Family Life

On January 4, 1808, George Shee married his first wife, Jane. She was the oldest daughter of William Young. Sadly, Jane died in October 1832 in a boating accident.

Later, in 1841, Shee married Sarah Barrett. She was the third daughter of Henry Barrett.

When Sir George Shee died, his property and money, including some mines in County Durham, went to his nephew. This nephew was George Edward Dering, the son of Shee's sister, Letitia.
