Sir Hector Munro, 1st Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Hector Munro, 1st Baronet of Foulis was a Scottish soldier and a leader, known as a clan chief, of the highland Clan Munro. He is traditionally seen as the 19th Baron and 22nd overall chief of his clan. However, he is the 12th chief whose leadership can be proven with records from his time.

Hector Munro was the younger brother of Robert Munro, 18th Baron of Foulis. Robert had only daughters, so Hector became the clan chief after him. Both brothers were sons of Hector Munro, 17th Baron of Foulis.

A Soldier's Life: The Thirty Years' War

Hector Munro, 1st Baronet, was first meant to join the church. This is why he was called "of Clynes." But he chose a military career early in his life. He became an important officer in Sir Donald Mackay, 1st Lord Reay's army group. His brother Robert, the 18th Baron, also served there.

Hector Munro fought in the Thirty Years' War. This was a big war in Europe. He served under Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden during his campaigns in Germany.

Becoming a Baronet

When his older brother Robert Munro, 18th Baron of Foulis passed away in 1633, Hector Munro inherited the family lands. He returned to Scotland in 1634. He then took control of the family estates and became the head of the clan.

King Charles I met Hector Munro in London. Soon after, the King made him a Baronet of Nova Scotia. This was a special title.

The official document, called a royal patent, that gave him this title was dated June 7, 1634. It said he was given the title for himself and his male heirs.

Final Journey to Germany

After sorting out his family matters, Sir Hector Munro, 1st Baronet, went back to Germany. He wanted to continue his military career because the war was still going on. He sailed from Cromarty and arrived safely in Hamburg in April 1635. Sadly, he died that same month in Hamburg. He was buried in "Buckstchood (Buxtehude) in the Old Land" near the Elbe river.
