Admiral Sir John Charles Dalrymple-Hay, 3rd Baronet (born 11 February 1821 – died 28 January 1912) was an important officer in the Royal Navy and a politician. He was known for his long career at sea and his work in the British Parliament.

Early Life and Family

John Dalrymple-Hay was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1821. He was the only child of Sir James Dalrymple Hay, 2nd Baronet, and his first wife, Elizabeth. Sadly, his mother passed away when he was very young.

He went to Rugby School, a famous school in England. He became the 3rd Baronet in 1861 after his father died. This meant he inherited a special title passed down through his family.

A Life at Sea: Naval Career

John Dalrymple-Hay joined the Royal Navy in 1834 when he was just 13 years old. He had a very active career at sea.

  • He was involved in the Xhosa Wars in South Africa.
  • He also took part in the Oriental Crisis of 1840 in Syria. During this time, he was present when the cities of Beirut and St Jean d'Acre were captured.
  • In the 1840s, he helped in successful operations against Chinese pirates.

He commanded several important ships. From 1854, he commanded HMS Victory, a very famous ship in British naval history. Later, he commanded HMS Hannibal during the Crimean War. For his service in this war, he received awards from both the British and Turkish governments.

He was promoted to captain in 1850. From 1856, he commanded HMS Indus. He continued to rise through the ranks, becoming a rear admiral in 1866. He retired from the navy as an admiral in March 1878. From 1866 to 1868, he also served as the Fourth Sea Lord, a senior position in the Royal Navy.

After King Edward VII became king, Sir John Dalrymple-Hay was given a very high honor. He was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB) in 1902. He received this award on the royal yacht Victoria and Albert in August 1902.

Working for the People: Political Career

Besides his naval career, Sir John Dalrymple-Hay was also a Conservative politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for several areas:

  • He represented Wakefield from 1862 to 1865.
  • He then represented Stamford from 1866 to 1880.
  • From 1880 to 1885, he was the MP for Wigtown Burghs in Scotland.

In 1874, he was made a privy counsellor. This is a special group of advisors to the King or Queen.

Later Life

Sir John Dalrymple-Hay married Eliza Napier in 1847. They had a large family with three sons and six daughters. His wife, Lady Dalrymple-Hay, passed away in 1901. Sir John lived for another eleven years, dying in January 1912 at the age of 90. His second but eldest surviving son, William, inherited the baronetcy.
