Sir John George Tollemache Sinclair (born November 8, 1825 – died September 30, 1912) was an important Scottish landowner and politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. He served in the British Parliament, known as the House of Commons, from 1869 to 1885.
Early Life and Education
John Sinclair was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1825. His father was Sir George Sinclair, 2nd Baronet, and his mother was Lady Catherine Camilla Tollemache. When he was young, he served as a Page of Honour for Queen Adelaide. This was a special role helping the Queen.
He went to school at Cheam School and later studied at the University of Durham.
His Political Journey
Before politics, John Sinclair was a lieutenant in the Scots Fusilier Guards, a famous army regiment. In 1861, he became a Vice-Lord Lieutenant for Caithness, an area in Scotland. This role meant he helped the main Lord Lieutenant with local duties.
In 1868, he inherited the title of Baronet from his father. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.
Sinclair was elected as a Member of Parliament for Caithness in 1869. He held this important position until 1885. This meant he represented the people of Caithness in the British Parliament. In the 1885 election, his son Clarence tried to win the seat but was not successful.
Family Life
In 1853, John Sinclair married Emma Standish. They had two sons and two daughters together:
- Amy Camilla Sinclair (born around 1854 – died 1925)
- Nina Mary Adelaide Sinclair (born 1856 – died 1924)
- Clarence Granville Sinclair (born 1858 – died 1895)
- George Felix Standish Sinclair (born 1861 – died 1943)
Sir John Sinclair passed away on September 30, 1912. His eldest son, Clarence, had already died. So, his grandson, Archibald Henry Macdonald Sinclair, inherited the Baronet title. Archibald later became a Viscount, which is another noble title.
