Sir Samuel George Joseph, born on August 15, 1888, was an important British businessman and politician. He is best known for being the 615th Lord Mayor of London, a very old and respected role in the city. He also served in the military and was given special honors for his work. Sir Samuel Joseph passed away on October 4, 1944, at the age of 56.

Early Life and Family

Samuel George Joseph was born into a family with interesting connections. His father was Abraham Joseph. His mother, Sarah, was the daughter of Samuel Gluckstein, who started a well-known tobacco business called Salmon & Gluckstein.

A Career in Building and Public Service

Samuel Joseph became very successful in business. In 1908, he teamed up with his cousin, Sydney Gluckstein. They bought a small building company called C. W. Bovis & Co. Together, they made it into a huge construction business. People said he was a "genius for organisation" because he was so good at planning and managing things.

During World War I, Samuel Joseph served his country. He was a captain in the Royal Irish Regiment and fought in France. When he came back, he even helped supervise a building project for Winston Churchill in London.

Later, Samuel Joseph became an underwriter for Lloyd's of London, which means he helped insure ships and other things. He also became an Alderman in the City of London. An Alderman is a senior member of the city's government.

He held several important positions in London's government:

  • In 1933, he was the Sheriff of London. This is an old and important role in the city.
  • Because of his service, he was made a Knight Bachelor in 1934. This means he was given the title "Sir."
  • From 1942 to 1943, he served as the Lord Mayor of London. This is the leader of the City of London Corporation.
  • After his time as Lord Mayor, on November 16, 1943, he was made a baronet. This is a special hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family.

His Family Life

Samuel Joseph was married to Edna Cicely (Phillips). Their son, Keith Joseph, grew up to become a very important politician himself. Keith Joseph served as a Cabinet Minister in the British government, which is a senior role in the government's team of leaders.

In 1909, Samuel Joseph's daughter, Julia, married Sir Samuel Gluckstein. He was a lawyer and also involved in politics.
