Sir Thomas Myddelton

Sir Thomas Myddelton, 1st Baronet (born 1624, died 1663) was an important Welsh politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's parliament. He served there at different times between 1646 and 1663. Sir Thomas first supported the Parliament's side, known as the Roundheads, during the English Civil War. Later, he joined an event called the Cheshire Uprising in 1659. This uprising aimed to bring the king back to power, a period known as the Restoration.

Life and Times of Sir Thomas Myddelton

Sir Thomas Myddelton was born on November 2, 1624. He was the second son of another famous politician, Sir Thomas Myddelton. His grandfather, also named Sir Thomas Myddelton, was the Lord Mayor of London in 1613. Young Thomas started his studies at Oriel College, Oxford in March 1640.

His Role in the English Civil War

During the English Civil War, Sir Thomas helped connect the Parliament with his father. His father was leading military campaigns in Wales. In March 1646, Sir Thomas became the governor of Chirk Castle. He also became a Deputy Lieutenant for Denbighshire in July 1646.

In 1646, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Flint. This was part of the Long Parliament. He helped collect taxes for the county in 1647. He also took part in the 'North Wales Association' in August 1648. However, he was removed from Parliament in December 1648 during an event called Pride's Purge.

Later Political Life and Restoration

Sir Thomas Myddelton was involved in Booth's rebellion in 1659. He held Chirk Castle during this time. He was told to leave the country unless Parliament pardoned him. Luckily, in 1660, Sir Thomas received a pardon.

He was then elected as an MP for Montgomery. This was for the Convention Parliament. On July 4, 1660, he was given the special title of Baronet of Chirk. In 1661, he became an MP for Denbighshire. He served in the Cavalier Parliament until he passed away in 1663.

Sir Thomas Myddelton died in London when he was 38 years old. He was buried at Chirk Castle.
