Early Years and Family Home

Sir Thomas Salusbury was born in March 1612. He was the oldest son of Sir Henry Salusbury, who was the first "Baronet" in their family. A Baronet is a special title, passed down through the family.

Thomas went to Jesus College, Oxford, for a while, but he didn't finish his studies there. In 1631, he started studying law at a place called the Inner Temple in London. However, he left in 1632 when his father passed away. He then took charge of his family's large estate, Lleweni Hall, in Denbighshire, Wales.

Public Service and Politics

Sir Thomas was part of a group that helped keep the peace in Flintshire and Denbighshire. In 1632, he was also chosen to be on the local council for the town of Denbigh.

He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Denbighshire in 1640. This was during a short meeting of Parliament called the Short Parliament. He didn't speak much during this time. His relative, Sir Thomas Myddleton, took his place in the next Parliament.

Fighting in the English Civil War

When the English Civil War began, Sir Thomas Salusbury chose to support King Charles I. He became a colonel and put together his own Royalist army group, called a regiment, from North Wales. The King's enemies in Parliament even called him a traitor for his strong support.

He fought in an important battle called the Battle of Edgehill. A few days later, the King gave him a special honorary degree from Oxford University. Sadly, Sir Thomas became very ill in Worcester. He died at the age of 31 and was buried in his family's burial place in Whitchurch on July 13, 1643.

His Poetry

Sir Thomas Salusbury was known as a talented poet. However, only one of his works was published during his lifetime. This was a long poem called The History of Joseph, which came out in 1636. He also wrote other poems and plays, but these stayed as handwritten copies.

A writer named Anthony Wood said that Sir Thomas had a "natural talent for poetry." He called him "a most noted poet of his time." The History of Joseph is now considered a very rare book. Sir Thomas dedicated this poem to Lady Myddelton, who was his grandfather's wife. He did this to thank her for taking care of him when he was young.

His Family

Sir Thomas Salusbury was survived by his wife, Hester. Her father was Sir Edward Tyrrell. Sir Thomas and Hester had two sons:

  • Thomas, who became the 3rd Baronet.
  • John, who became the 4th and last Baronet.

They also had a daughter named Hester, who married Sir Robert Cotton.
