Sir William Mordaunt Edward Milner (born June 20, 1820 – died February 12, 1867) was an important British politician. He held the title of the 5th Baronet of Nun Appleton Hall. A Baronet is a special hereditary title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family. Sir William was a member of the Whig party, which was a major political group in Britain during his time.
Early Life and Family
William Milner was born and baptized in a place called Bolton Percy in Yorkshire, England. His father was Sir William Mordaunt Sturt Milner, who was the 4th Baronet. His mother was Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish-Bentinck.
In 1844, William Milner married Lady Georgiana Anne Lumley. Her parents were Frederick Lumley-Savile and Charlotte Mary Beresford. William and Georgiana had seven children together. These included Edith Harriet, Evelyn Selina, William Mordaunt, Frederick George, Granville Henry, Dudley Francis, and Edward Carolus.
Political Career
Sir William Milner became a Member of Parliament, often called an MP. An MP is a person elected by citizens to represent them in the country's main law-making body, the Parliament.
He was first elected as an MP for the City of York. This happened in 1848 during a special election called a by-election. A by-election takes place when an MP leaves their job before the next general election. In this case, it was because the previous MP, Henry Galgacus Redhead Yorke, had passed away.
Milner served as the MP for City of York for nine years. He held his seat in Parliament until 1857. At that time, he decided not to run for re-election.
The Baronetcy Title
The title of Baronet of Nun Appleton Hall was passed down in Sir William's family. On March 24, 1855, his father, Sir William Mordaunt Sturt Milner, passed away. At this point, William Milner became the 5th Baronet.
When Sir William Mordaunt Edward Milner himself passed away in 1867, the Baronet title was inherited by his son, William Mordaunt Milner. He then became the 6th Baronet.
