Sir William Oglander (born around 1611, died 1670) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons of England, which is like a parliament, from 1660 until he passed away in 1670. Sir William was a strong supporter of the King's side, known as the Royalists, during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Family

Sir William Oglander was the son of Sir John Oglander and his wife, Frances More. His mother's father was Sir George More from Loseley Park in Surrey. Sir William's father, Sir John, held important positions. He was the deputy governor of Portsmouth and later of the Isle of Wight.

A Difficult Time: The English Civil War

In April 1640, Sir William Oglander was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Yarmouth (Isle of Wight). This was during a short meeting of Parliament called the Short Parliament. His father had held this same seat before King Charles I ruled without Parliament for a while.

However, Sir William had some disagreements with the local council, so he never actually took his seat in Parliament at that time. The Oglander family was very loyal to King Charles I. Because of their support for the King, they faced many difficulties and hardships during the English Civil War.

After the War: A New Start

After the war ended and the King was restored to power in 1660, Sir William Oglander's political career began again. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Newport (Isle of Wight). He continued to serve in this role until he died in 1670.

In 1664, he was given another important job: deputy-governor of the Isle of Wight. A year later, on December 12, 1665, he was given a special title. He became a Baronet of Nunwell. A Baronet is a title of honor, like a knight, that can be passed down through the family.

Family Life

Sir William Oglander married Dorothy Clerke, who was the daughter of Sir Francis Clerke. After Sir William passed away, his son, also named John, inherited the Baronet title from him.
