Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Siula Grande is a very tall mountain in the Andes mountain range, located in Peru, a country in South America. This amazing peak stands at 6,344 metres (20,814 ft) high, making it one of the highest mountains in the Andes. It is known for its challenging climbs and beautiful, icy slopes. Siula Grande is the 29th highest mountain in the Andes range.

Where is Siula Grande?

Siula Grande is found in the Huayhuash mountain range, which is part of the larger Andes mountains. The Andes stretch along the western side of South America. This specific mountain is located on the border between the Lima Region and the Huánuco Region in Peru.

The area around Siula Grande is very remote and wild. It has many other tall peaks, deep valleys, and sparkling glaciers. Because it is so high up, the weather can change very quickly, making it a tough place for climbers.

What Makes Siula Grande Special?

Siula Grande is famous for its steep and difficult climbing routes. It is especially known for its west face, which is a huge, icy wall that is very hard to climb. Many experienced mountaineers dream of conquering its peaks.

One of the most famous stories about Siula Grande involves two British climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, in 1985. Their incredible and dangerous climb, and their struggle to survive, was later told in a book and a movie called Touching the Void. This story showed just how challenging and unpredictable climbing Siula Grande can be.

The First Climbs

The first time anyone successfully climbed to the very top of Siula Grande was in 1936. Two German climbers, Arnold Awerzger and Erwin Schneider, made it to the summit using the mountain's north face. This was a huge achievement at the time, as climbing equipment and techniques were not as advanced as they are today.

Over the years, other climbing teams have found new ways to reach the top, often choosing even harder routes. Each new climb adds to the mountain's history as a place for brave adventurers.

Climate and Environment

The climate around Siula Grande is typical of high-altitude mountains. It is very cold, especially at night and during the winter months. Snow and ice cover much of the mountain year-round.

The best time to visit or climb Siula Grande is usually during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, there is less snow and more stable weather, though conditions can still be very harsh. Outside of this period, heavy snowfalls and strong winds make climbing extremely dangerous.

Local Wildlife

Even in this harsh environment, some animals and plants manage to survive. You might see hardy plants like puna grasses and small shrubs. Animals adapted to the cold include:

  • Vicuña: A wild relative of the llama, known for its fine wool.
  • Andean condor: A very large bird, one of the biggest flying birds in the world, often seen soaring high above the peaks.
  • Vizcacha: A type of rodent that looks a bit like a rabbit, often found among the rocks.

These creatures are specially adapted to live in the thin air and cold temperatures of the high Andes.

Why is Mountain Climbing Popular?

People climb mountains like Siula Grande for many reasons. Some climbers love the challenge and the feeling of reaching a summit. Others are drawn by the incredible views and the chance to be in wild, untouched nature. It takes a lot of training, skill, and courage to climb such a tall mountain.
