Sjarifuddin Baharsjah (born May 16, 1931 – died January 15, 2021) was an important Indonesian expert in agriculture. He was also a professor at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB). He held a very important job as the Minister of Agriculture of Indonesia. He also led the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which is a big international group working on food.

Early Life and School
Sjarifuddin Baharsjah was born on May 16, 1931, in Cirebon, West Java. His parents were Sutan Pangeran Baharsyah and Siti Fatimatul Zahra. His father came from a royal family, the Pagaruyung Kingdom. Sjarifuddin was the second of four children in his family. When he was a child, his mother made him learn female dances because she thought he was "really pretty."
He finished high school in 1952. After that, he studied at the University of Indonesia. He earned an engineering degree in 1960. He continued his studies in the United States. He got a Master of Science degree from the University of Kentucky in 1965. Later, he earned his PhD (a very high-level degree) from North Carolina State University in 1973.
His Career
Sjarifuddin Baharsjah had a long and important career. He worked as a teacher and also in the government.
Teaching and Research
After finishing his studies at the University of Indonesia, Sjarifuddin started teaching at the IPB University. He became a full professor in 1984. This means he was a top expert in his field.
Working for the Government
Sjarifuddin began working for the Department of Agriculture in 1977. He was in charge of research and development for agricultural economics. He held this job for six years. From 1983 to 1988, he was the Secretary General of the department. This is a very senior role.
On March 23, 1988, President Suharto chose him to be the Junior Minister of Agriculture. He was then promoted to Minister of Agriculture on March 17, 1993. He served as Minister until March 14, 1998. After his term, his wife, Justika Baharsjah, took over the role.
Sjarifuddin was also a member of the People's Consultative Assembly. This is a group of people who help make important decisions for the country. He represented the North Sumatra province. He started this job on October 1, 1997. His term was supposed to be five years, but it ended early in 1999 because of big political changes in Indonesia.
He also had an important international role. He became the Independent Chairman of the Council for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He held this position for two terms, from 1997 to 1999 and again from 1999 to 2001. The FAO works to make sure everyone in the world has enough good food.
Family Life
Sjarifuddin married Justika in 1962. They had two children together, named Gita Indah Sari and Antin.
His Passing
Sjarifuddin Baharsjah passed away on January 15, 2021. He was 89 years old. He died in Jakarta, Indonesia.
