Skatval's Past: A Look at History
The southwestern coast of the Skatval peninsula was known as Aglo during the Viking Age. This was a long time ago, when Vikings explored and settled many lands.
In the year 962, a powerful leader named Sigurd Håkonsson Ladejarl was in charge of the Trøndelag area. He and his group were attacked and killed at Oglo (Aglo). This happened when the sons of Eric Bloodaxe, including Harald Greycloak, set fire to the place where they were staying. This story is told in the Heimskringla, a famous collection of sagas written by Snorri Sturlasson.
Steinvikholm Castle: A Stronghold of the Past
The old Steinvikholm Castle is still standing, and people are working to fix it up. This castle was built in the 1530s by Olav Engelbrektsson. He was Norway's last Catholic archbishop. The castle was very modern for its time. It played a big part as the last place where Norwegians tried to stay independent. This was during the Protestant Reformation, when big changes happened in the church and in the union between Denmark and Norway.
Today, the small island where the castle is located hosts a special outdoor opera every year. It is called "Olav Engelbrektsson" and is performed at midnight.
Churches in Skatval's History
Long ago, the main church for Skatval was the old Fløan Church. It was located in Fløan, on the northern coast of the Skatval peninsula. This church was taken down in 1851. A new church, Skatval Church, was built in 1901 in the village of Skatval. Some materials from the old Fløan Church are now kept in a museum in Trondheim.
How Skatval Became a Municipality
On January 1, 1902, the Skatval peninsula became its own municipality. This happened when the larger area of Nedre Stjørdal was split into three parts: Skatval, Stjørdal, and Lånke. Later, on January 1, 1962, Skatval joined with Lånke, Stjørdal, and Hegra. Together, they formed a new, bigger municipality called Stjørdal.
