Ski ballet facts for kids
Ski ballet, sometimes just called Ballet, was a fun and artistic sport done on skis. It was a lot like figure skating, where athletes performed spins, jumps, and flips. These moves were part of a routine set to music. Ski ballet was popular in the 1970s and 1980s. It was even an official sport for the FIS and a demonstration sport at the Olympics. In the 1990s, it was renamed Acroski. This was to make it seem more serious in the world of competitive skiing. However, it is no longer a competitive part of freestyle skiing.

What is Ski Ballet?
Ski ballet involved a planned routine of cool moves. These included flips, rolls, leg crossings, jumps, and spins. Skiers performed these tricks on a smooth, gentle slope. After the mid-1970s, each routine was set to music and lasted about 90 seconds.
For a short time in the 1980s, there were also pair ballet competitions. In these, two people performed together. They did tricks like spins, jumps, and leg crossings. They also included lifts and moves done at the same time. Judges scored the performances, much like in figure skating.
