The Skidi or Skiri are a group of Pawnee people. They are also known as the Wolf Pawnee or the French Loup Pawnee. Long ago, the Skidi were connected to the Arikara people before the Arikara moved north. The Skidi language was a bit different from the languages spoken by other Pawnee groups. In the past, the Skidi first lived near the Loup River in what is now Nebraska.

Who Are the Skidi Pawnee?

The Skidi Pawnee are an important part of the larger Pawnee Nation. They have a rich history and unique traditions. Today, many Skidi Pawnee are part of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma.

Where They Lived

The Skidi's main homes were along the Platte River. Some early explorers called this river the Panimaha River. This was before some Skidi moved south. That name later became linked to a different group of people.

A Group Moves South

By the 1770s, a group of Skidi people decided to move away. They traveled south towards what is now Texas. There, they became friends with other tribes. These tribes included the Taovayas, the Tonkawa, and the Yojuanes. This group of Skidi was known as the Panimaha.
