Discovering Slackwood's History
Slackwood got its name from two people: Joseph Slack and William Wood. They owned the land that was later divided into smaller pieces to create the neighborhood we see today. This process of dividing land is called "subdivision."
How Slackwood Began
The community of Slackwood started way back in 1890. It was one of the first new neighborhoods built outside the main city areas in Lawrence Township. At that time, a part of Lawrence Township had become its own separate town, which is now part of Trenton.
A Perfect Location for Growth
Slackwood's location was very helpful for its early residents. It was built between two important roads: Princeton Pike (now called County Route 583) and Brunswick Pike (U.S. Route 1 Business). This made it easy for people living in Slackwood to walk to factories in nearby Trenton for work.
Slackwood Today: Homes and Nature
Today, many of the homes in Slackwood are still small, cozy houses called "bungalows." You can also find some businesses located along Princeton and Brunswick Pikes.
Exploring Slackwood's Boundaries
The neighborhood has clear boundaries that help define it. On two sides, it's bordered by the two main highways, Princeton Pike and Brunswick Pike. To the southwest, you'll find Slackwood Park and a forest, offering green spaces. On the northeast side, the community is bordered by the Shabakunk Creek and its park.
