Slappy and the Stinkers is a fun adventure comedy film from 1998. It was directed by Barnet Kellman. The story is about a group of kids who try to save a sea lion named Slappy. They want to protect him from a greedy circus owner. The movie stars B. D. Wong and Bronson Pinchot.
The Story of Slappy and the Stinkers
At a fancy school called Dartmoor Academy, Principal Morgan Brinway makes the second-graders study opera. But five lively kids, who Mr. Brinway calls the "Stinkers," have other plans! They often skip class to cause some playful trouble around the school.
The Stinkers include Sonny, who is the leader, Loaf, who loves building things, Domino, who enjoys movies, Lucy, who is kind but tough, and Witz, who sometimes joins in. One day, Witz becomes a test pilot for a flying chair, which was one of Sonny's new ideas.
The kids sneak into Groundskeeper Roy's shed and take his leaf blower. They had already taken Mr. Brinway's desk chair. They tried to tape the leaf blower to the chair, but it wasn't taped on well enough. When they turned it on, the leaf blower flew off! It headed straight for Mr. Brinway's new convertible car. Luckily, it ran out of gas just before hitting the car. However, Roy accidentally damaged the car's side door with his lawn mower. Mr. Brinway warned the Stinkers they would be kicked out if they caused any more trouble.
The Stinkers soon find a sea lion named Slappy during a field trip to an aquarium. Sonny and his friends decide to free Slappy! They smuggle him onto the school bus and hide him in Mr. Brinway's hot tub. To celebrate their success, they have a party.
Mr. Brinway comes home earlier than expected. The Stinkers quickly get Slappy out and hide him at Witz's house. Groundskeeper Roy mistakes Slappy for a giant gopher and tries to get rid of him. Meanwhile, a man named Anthony Boccoli, who buys and sells animals, wants to steal Slappy. He plans to sell Slappy to a circus in Bulgaria. He tries to catch Slappy, but he keeps failing.
The next day, the Stinkers take Slappy to the beach to set him free. But Slappy does not want to go into the water! The kids soon see an orca (a type of whale) swimming nearby. Orcas eat sea lions, so that's why Slappy was scared to go in the water. Sonny decides they should take Slappy back to the aquarium.
First, they have to go to a festival at Dartmoor. Roy tries to get rid of Slappy again, which causes many problems at the festival. Mr. Brinway thinks the Stinkers caused all the trouble and expels them from school. But then, the Stinkers find out that Boccoli has kidnapped Slappy! This makes the kids start a rescue mission.
The group finds Boccoli's secret hideout. They get rid of him by squirting him with water, blowing sawdust on him, and even shooting him with Roy's gopher bomb gun. After saving Slappy, Boccoli chases the Stinkers. Mr. Brinway and his class are on a hiking trip to watch birds. The Stinkers crash through, and Mr. Brinway ends up joining their escape!
They are chased to a log flume ride. The Stinkers and Mr. Brinway escape Boccoli by going down the flume. Boccoli tries to drown them by turning on the water, but a beaver's nest blocks it. When he removes the nest, a beaver bites him! The water splashes him, and he slides down the spillway. The Stinkers, Slappy, and Mr. Brinway land safely in the lake below. Boccoli falls onto a floating log. Roy, who is also the school bus driver, ties a rope around Boccoli. Slappy is returned to the aquarium. Mr. Brinway takes back the expulsion, and the Stinkers become heroes!
