The slaty becard (Pachyramphus spodiurus) is a special kind of bird. It belongs to a bird family called Tityridae. For a long time, people thought it was part of other bird families. But now, scientists are sure it fits best with the Tityridae family.

Where It Lives

This bird can be found in two countries: Ecuador and the very northern part of Peru. It likes to live in places called subtropical or tropical dry forests. These are warm forests that don't get too much rain.

Protecting the Slaty Becard

Sadly, the number of slaty becards is getting smaller. Because of this, they are considered an endangered species. This means they are at high risk of disappearing forever.

Some big problems for these birds include:

  • More and more cities and towns are being built.
  • More land is being used for farming.
  • Too many trees are being cut down, which is called deforestation.

These problems mean the places where the slaty becards live are getting broken up. Even though their population is small, some of these birds live in special areas that are protected. Scientists believe there are only about 600 to 1,700 adult slaty becards left.

What It Looks Like

The slaty becard has feathers that are mostly grey. Its chest is a lighter shade of grey. It has a black eye and a beak that is dark grey.
