The slender seahorse or longsnout seahorse (Hippocampus reidi) is a cool type of fish. It belongs to the Syngnathidae family, which also includes pipefishes. These amazing creatures are known for their unique looks and how they live in the ocean.

What Does the Slender Seahorse Look Like?

The slender seahorse usually grows to be about 17.5 centimeters (around 6.8 inches) long. That's about the length of a pencil! It's easy to tell the males and females apart because they have bright, different colors.

  • Males are often a bright orange.
  • Females are usually yellow.

Both male and female seahorses can have brown or white spots on their bodies. These spots can even change color to pink or white when they are looking for a mate.

Where Do Slender Seahorses Live?

Slender seahorses live in the ocean, sometimes as deep as 55 meters (about 180 feet). Younger, smaller seahorses prefer to stay in shallower waters.

Favorite Ocean Homes

These seahorses love to hang out in places with lots of cover. You can often find them in:

Where in the World Are They Found?

The slender seahorse lives in many countries across subtropical regions. This includes places like:

  • The Bahamas
  • Brazil
  • Colombia
  • Cuba
  • The United States (Florida and North Carolina)
  • Venezuela

They live in warm waters between 29 degrees north and 25 degrees south of the equator.

Why Are They at Risk?

Sadly, slender seahorses are facing challenges. Many of them live near China and Brazil. In these areas, their numbers are decreasing. In some places, seahorses are collected for trade or for use in traditional medicines. In Brazil, a large number of seahorses are collected each year for trade. This collection puts their populations at risk of becoming endangered.

Who Named the Slender Seahorse?

The specific name of this seahorse, reidi, was given to honor a person named Mr. Earl D. Reid. He worked in the Division of Fishes at the U.S. National Museum.
