Slumber Tsogwane was born on September 21, 1960. He is a politician from Botswana. From April 2018 to November 2024, he served as the Vice-President of Botswana. He was also a Member of Parliament for the Boteti West area. He was known for being one of the longest-serving Members of Parliament in the 12th Parliament of Botswana. He is a member of the Botswana Democratic Party, which is a political party in Botswana.
Early Life and Education
Slumber Tsogwane studied at the University of Botswana. In 1985, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Humanities. Later, he continued his studies at the same university and received a Master's Degree in Development Studies.
Political Career
Before becoming a politician, Slumber Tsogwane worked as a teacher. He even held the position of Deputy School Head.
In 1997, he tried to become the Executive Secretary for his political party, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), but he was not successful.
The next year, in 1998, Tsogwane ran in the primary elections for the Boteti area. He won against the person who held the position before him, Gabofele Masusu. After that, he won the main elections in 1999 and became a Member of Parliament.
In 2002, Festus Mogae, who was the President at the time, chose Tsogwane to join the government's main group of ministers, known as the cabinet. He became the Assistant Minister of Finance and Development Planning, helping the main minister in charge of money and planning for the country's growth.
After the 2004 general elections, he was no longer a minister and became a regular Member of Parliament. In 2014, after being re-elected to represent Boteti West, Ian Khama appointed him as the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development. This meant he was in charge of local areas and developing rural parts of the country. He held this position from November 2014 to March 2018.
On April 4, 2018, Slumber Tsogwane became the Vice President of Botswana. He took over this role from Mokgweetsi Masisi.
He also gave the opening speech at the Under 30 Africa Summit in 2024.
