Early Life and Schooling
Ndaba Gaolathe was born in Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana. His father, Baledzi Gaolathe, was also a famous politician who served as the country's minister of finance for ten years.
Ndaba went to Lesedi Primary School and Gaborone Secondary School. After finishing school in Botswana, he moved to the United States for college.
He studied economics at George Washington University. He then earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in finance from the famous Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997.
Journey into Politics
Gaolathe started his political career in the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). The BDP was the ruling party in Botswana for a very long time. Later, he decided to join a new party called the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD).
He became an important leader in the BMD. He helped the BMD team up with other political parties, like the Botswana National Front (BNF) and the Botswana People's Party (BPP). Together, they formed an alliance called the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). Their goal was to work together in elections.
In 2014, after the sad death of the BMD's leader, Gaolathe took over. He ran in the 2014 general election alongside Duma Boko. The UDC came in second place, and Gaolathe won a seat in parliament.
Leading a New Party
In 2017, there were disagreements inside the BMD party. Because of this, Gaolathe left and started his own political party, the Alliance for Progressives (AP). He has been the leader of the AP ever since.
As the AP's leader, he ran for president in the 2019 general election. He came in third place and did not win back his seat in parliament that year.
Becoming Vice-President
Before the 2024 elections, Gaolathe and his party, the AP, decided to join the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) alliance again. This meant he was once again working closely with Duma Boko.
The UDC had a huge victory in the 2024 election. For the first time since Botswana's independence, the BDP party lost. Duma Boko became the new president.
Gaolathe also won back his seat in parliament. A few days after the election, President Boko officially named Ndaba Gaolathe as the new Vice-President of Botswana.
