The small hocicudo (Oxymycterus hiska) is a tiny rodent that belongs to the Cricetidae family. It is a lesser-known animal.
You can find this small rodent in Bolivia and Peru. It lives on the eastern slopes of the Andes mountains.
Where the Small Hocicudo Lives
This species makes its home in wet mountain forests. It especially likes forests with Polylepis trees. These forests are found on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Peru and Bolivia.
The small hocicudo lives at high altitudes. It can be found from 600 to 3,500 meters above sea level. It seems to be rare in Peru. However, it is more common to find them in Bolivia. Sometimes, these animals are also seen near farms. Their population numbers appear to be steady.
Daily Life and Diet
The small hocicudo is active both during the day and at night. It spends most of its time on the ground.
This rodent finds its food by digging. It looks for small bugs and worms in the leaves and dirt on the ground.
Reproduction
Scientists do not know much about how small hocicudos have babies. However, it is thought that they might breed around March or April. This time is usually at the end of the rainy season.
