The Story of Smart Technologies

How Smart Technologies Began

Smart Technologies was started in 1987. A husband and wife, David Martin and Nancy Knowlton, created the company.

Creating the Smart Board

In 1991, Smart Technologies made its first interactive whiteboard. This was the very first "Smart Board".

In 2003, the company created a special technology. It was called DViT (Digital Vision Touch). This technology helped the Smart Board work even better. It made the touch screen more accurate.

Growth and Changes

By 2011, Smart Boards were very popular. They were the top interactive whiteboards in the world. They had a 63% share in the United States. Globally, they had a 47% share. At that time, about 1,700 people worked for Smart Technologies.

In 2012, the company made some changes. David Martin and Nancy Knowlton, the founders, left their main roles. The company also had to reduce its number of employees. This was to help the company save money.

Becoming Part of Foxconn

In 2016, a big company called Foxconn bought Smart Technologies Inc. Foxconn paid $200 million for the company. Smart Technologies is now a part of Foxconn.
