Smicksburg and the Amish Community
Smicksburg is part of a special area known as the Amish heritage corridor. This area stretches through several counties in Pennsylvania, including Clearfield, Jefferson, Indiana, and Armstrong counties.
What is the Amish Heritage Corridor?
The Amish heritage corridor is a route where you can often see Amish buggies sharing the roads with cars. It connects different Amish settlements. These settlements are communities where Amish people live and work.
The Smicksburg Amish Settlement
The Amish settlement around Smicksburg is one of the largest in Pennsylvania. It's the third largest in the state and the eleventh largest in the entire United States! This settlement started in 1962.
Even though Smicksburg borough was founded by Reverend John George Schmick, and many people in the surrounding area are Amish, no Amish families actually live inside the small Smicksburg borough itself.
Things to See and Do
In the Smicksburg Amish settlement, you can find many unique shops. These shops sell items made by the Amish, such as:
- Handcrafts
- Beautiful quilts
- Furniture
- Fresh foods
- Places to eat
The Amish in this area use black buggies, which are a common sight.
Nearby Amish Settlements
Other Amish settlements along the corridor include:
- Troutville: This settlement in Clearfield County is quite large and has farms and small shops.
- Big Run, Cloe, and Punxsutawney: These are in Jefferson County.
- Rural Valley: This borough in Armstrong County is also part of the corridor. The local high school, West Shamokin High School, is named after the historic Great Shamokin Path.
