History of Smithfield
Smithfield was first called "Summit Creek." This was because it was located right on Summit Creek. The city was started in 1857 by two brothers, Robert and John Thornley, and their cousin Seth Langton. They were sent north from Salt Lake City by Brigham Young, who was the leader of the LDS Church at the time. Their mission was to create a new settlement.
After looking around, Robert Thornley came back with his new wife, Annie Brighton. They spent their first winter living in a wagon box. More settlers arrived the next summer. They built a small fort near the creek. One of the original cabins from that fort is still standing today.
As the town grew, a man named John Glover Smith was chosen to lead the church group as their bishop. The town then took his name, becoming Smithfield. In December 1902, a large building called the Smithfield Tabernacle was finished. By 1917, the town had planted trees along Main Street. It also had a Carnegie library and a Rotary club.
For many years, Smithfield relied on dairy farming. It also had a Del Monte canning factory and a sugar beet industry. Today, Smithfield is mostly a "bedroom community." This means many people who live there travel to nearby Logan for work or to attend Utah State University.
