Smithfield is a small village located in Fulton County, Illinois, in the United States. It is a quiet place with a population of 191 people, based on the 2020 census. The village got its name from Dr. Joseph N. Smith.

Where is Smithfield Located?
Smithfield is found in the western part of Fulton County. A main road, Illinois Route 95, runs along the northern edge of the village. This highway can take you about 6 miles (9.7 km) east to Cuba. If you travel west on the same road, you'll reach Marietta in about 5.5 miles (8.9 km).
The county seat of Fulton County, Lewistown, is about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Smithfield. You can get there by taking Illinois Route 95 and then Illinois Route 97.

Railroad Connections
Smithfield is served by the Keokuk Junction Railway. This railway is part of a larger company called Pioneer Railcorp. In the past, the tracks that run through Smithfield were used by BNSF, another big railroad company.

Smithfield was first established in the year 1868. It has a long history, even though it's a small village.
Important Events in Smithfield's Past
A big event in Smithfield's history happened in 1900 when a large part of the village was destroyed by a fire.
The village's railway history also changed over time. Smithfield used to be served by the TP&W (Toledo, Peoria And Western Railway). Later, these tracks were sold to the KJRY (Keokuk Junction Railway), which still serves the area today.
Old Buildings and Businesses
In earlier times, Smithfield had several important businesses that are no longer there. These included a grocery store, a bank, a hardware store, and a railroad depot.
Today, the old bank building has been turned into a historic museum. The Red Brick School is also a historic site. You can even see the old jail cells from the village's former jail in the parking lot of the Red Brick School.
